Silicon promises longer-range, faster-charging and more-affordable EVs than those whose batteries feature today’s graphite anodes. It not only soaks up more lithium ions, it also shuttles them across the battery’s membrane faster. And as the most abundant metal in Earth’s crust, it should be cheaper and less susceptible to supply-chain issues.
Most every major battery or transportation company has a silicon strategy, Williams said. He adds that some analysts might not agree, but he foresees batteries with 30-to-100 percent silicon anodes being heavily commercialized within three to five years. “It’s not whether they’ll be using silicon, but how much and when,” Williams said.

This innovation can be produced in existing lithium-ion facilities.
In fact, silicon’s first documented use as a lithium battery anode even predates that of graphite— by seven years. But experiments with that element have been plagued by technical challenges—including volume expansion of the anode when loaded with lithium ions and the resulting material fracture that can happen when an anode expands and contracts.
Addressing concerns such as low conductivity, pulverization, fracture, dense solid electrolyte interface layer, and low coulombic efficiency has substantially improved the use of silicon electrodes in solid-state batteries.
