Battery research occurs throughout the value chain of battery development. It can be oriented toward battery cells, based on competences in chemistry, physics, materials science, modelling, characterization, etc. It can also be oriented toward systems where the battery cells are integrated into packs, to be used in different applications.
The data generated across different length and time scales, using a wide range of complementary approaches, including numerical simulation, autonomous high-throughput material synthesis and characterization, in-operando experiments, and device-level testing, will all contribute to new material and battery cell development.
Over the years, many fundamental studies have examined different battery chemistries using sophisticated diagnostic tools. Although quite spectacular, these analytical techniques rely on specific equipment and cells and cannot be transferred to analyzing commercial cells.
Currently, pyrometallurgy is the most applied method. After potential dismantling and sorting into categories according to the battery chemistries, the batteries or battery parts are directly fed into the recycling process or further fragmented by physical means (e.g., shredding or grinding).
Batteries are used in many applications and are considered to be one technology necessary to reach the climate goals. Currently the market is dominated by lithium-ion batteries, which perform well, but despite new generations coming in the near future, they will soon approach their performance limits.
Specifically, as depicted in Fig. 10b, the author combined accumulated local effects (ALE), H-statistics, and RF-based regression models, selecting mass, thickness, and porosity as input parameters to predict the final battery products’ cell capacity (C cap), gravimetric capacity (G cap), and volumetric capacity (V cap).
