The term fluidization is used to designate the gas-solid contacting process in which a bed of finely divided solid particles is lifted and agitated by a rising stream of process gas. At the lower end of the velocity range, the amount of lifting is slight, the bed behaving like a boiling liquid (hence the term boiling bed ).
In a batch fluidized bed granulation process, inherent instability is present. The properties of solid particles themselves are important factors in fluid dynamics. The size, shape, density, and surface roughness of particles influence how they interact with the fluid, altering the drag forces and overall flow behavior.

Fluidization behavior is influenced by the interaction of gas and solid particles. Drag forces caused by particle and gas motion dictate particle velocity and bed expansion. Furthermore, particle–wall interactions influence particle dispersion near the wall, impacting flow patterns and mixing.
Analysis was conducted on how the fluidized bed’s hydrodynamics and thermal behavior were affected by the gas superficial velocity and bed aspect ratio. Greater particles circulated upward in the central region at higher initial bed heights, while enhanced particle circulation was shown at higher superficial velocities.
The fluidization regime used, whether bubbling, slugging, or turbulent, has a direct influence on fluid dynamics. Gas velocity, particle size, and bed characteristics control transitions between these regimes. Each regime has unique hydrodynamic properties that influence particle behavior, mixing, and heat/mass transmission.

Fluidization
Fluidization in Natural Phenomena. Masayuki. Horio, in Reference Module in Chemistry, Molecular Sciences and Chemical Engineering, 2017. Introduction. Fluidization is a collective phenomenon of "particulate" and "discrete" materials. When they behave as if a "fluid," or in other words, as if a "frictionless continuum," they are in the fluidized condition.

History of fluidization in North America
The gas/solid fluidization phenomena can be seen in early United States ore roasting and ore separation patents [7]. These and similar references lead to the belief that the fluidization phenomena had been observed for decades before Winker and the United States Bureau of Mines (USBM). There are similar early developments in many countries.

The paper introduces the phenomenon of fluidization as a process. Fluidization occurs when a fluid (liquid or gas) is pushed upwards through a bed of granular material. This may make the granular material to behave like a liquid and, for example, keep a level meniscus on a tilted container, or make a lighter object float on top and a heavier object sink to the bottom.
