Large-scale solar and heliospheric magnetic fields
The magnetic structure of the extended solar corona varies with the changing photospheric field during the solar cycle. A simple potential model of the corona using solar surface observations from 1976 to the present shows how the large-scale coronal field evolves over more than a solar activity cycle.

Chasing Down the Slow Solar Wind
The Sun''s plasma blasts Earth''s magnetosphere at more than a million miles per hour. The fastest pours from holes in the corona, but until recently the source of the "slow" solar wind was a mystery.
Solar Sector Structure | Space Science Reviews
The interplanetary magnetic field near 1 AU has a characteristic "sector" structure that reflects its polarity relative to the solar direction. Typically we observe large-scale coherence in these directions, with two or four "away" or "towards" sectors per solar rotation, from any platform in deep space and near the ecliptic plane. In a simple picture, this morphology …
Scaling laws and coherent structures in the solar wind
In the solar wind, intermittency is observed well within the inertial range, at scales which are orders of magnitude away from the ion-cyclotron frequency where resonant phenomena between waves and particles would dissipate energy and heat the plasma (Marsch and Tu, 1997) the top panel of Fig. 1 we show the absolute value of the spectral index of …

A model of interplanetary and coronal magnetic fields
A model of the large-scale magnetic field structure above the photosphere uses a Green''s function solution to Maxwell''s equations. Sources for the magnetic field are related to the observed photospheric field and to the field computed at a ''source'' surface about 0.6 R ⊙ above the photosphere. The large-scale interplanetary magnetic field sector pattern is related to the …
