The Batteries Regulation is a new regulation that sets requirements for batteries and waste batteries placed in the EU market. It covers all types of batteries unless an exemption applies. In this guide, we explain when the regulation will begin to apply, and its differences from the prior Batteries Directive.
To minimise the environmental impacts of this growth and considering changes in society, new technological developments, markets and the uses of batteries, the European Commission proposed a new Batteries Regulation in 2020. The Regulation entered into force on 17 August 2023 and repeals the Batteries Directive (Directive 2006/66/EC).
In addition, its scope also includes collection and recycling. The Battery Directive regulates lithium batteries including lithium-ion batteries, lithium-ion polymer batteries and lithium metal batteries sold in the EU market. For instance, it sets limits for the use of hazardous substances used in lithium batteries.
After the batteries have been lab tested, and if the products pass testing, you receive a test report indicating their products’ compliance with relevant standards or other requirements. Here we list a few companies that offer to test against either the Batteries Directive or the new Batteries Regulation:
The Battery Directive covers both heavy metals restrictions and labeling requirements. In addition, its scope also includes collection and recycling. The Battery Directive regulates lithium batteries including lithium-ion batteries, lithium-ion polymer batteries and lithium metal batteries sold in the EU market.
For example, the Battery Directive requires that the recycling processes of lead-acid batteries must achieve a minimum efficiency of 65%, and the batteries must be removable from appliances. Various types of batteries can be applied to your vehicles such as starting, lighting and ignition batteries.
