Compressed CO 2 energy storage (CCES) is a promising energy storage option with benefits like easy liquefaction, high density, and environmental compatibility. Global energy storage demands are rising sharply, making the development of sustainable and efficient technologies critical.
In experimental research on the CCES system, Alirahmi et al.73 explored the use of carbon dioxide as the working fluid in a low-pressure compressed gas energy storage system. They gathered experimental data on key thermal parameters of the CCES system by constructing a test-bed.
This amounts to about 100 bcm of gas in storage in the EU, representing around one third of the EU's annual gas consumption. Today, the Commission adopted intermediate targets that EU countries are required to meet in 2025 to ensure gas storage facilities are filled to at least 90% of capacity by 1 November 2025.
