See all authors Photocurrent matching in conventional monolithic tandem solar cells is achieved by choosing semiconductors with complementary absorption spectra and by carefully adjusting the optical properties of the complete top and bottom stacks.
The study presents the design of two tandem solar cells using the current matching technique. There is potential for further research to investigate alternative designs of tandem solar cells by transfer matrix approach.
The cumulative impact of the variation in both T A and N d on the photovoltaic (PV) parameters of the solar cell has been analyzed and presented in Fig. 2 (a-d). The observation is that increasing the thickness of the CsSn 0.5 Ge0.5I 3 layer increased the PCE of the solar cell due to an increase in photon absorption.
For tandem solar cells (TSCs), the highest efficiency is generally believed to occur when the top and bottom sub-cells obtain an identical photocurrent, i.e., the current-match condition. However, the real situation is that there is a slight deviation from the matching point, which is an interesting phenomenon, but lacks a clear explanation.
However, for thin film photovoltaic technologies at the module level, another design variable significantly alleviates the task of photocurrent matching, namely the cell width, whose modification can be readily realized by the adjustment of the module layout.
A comprehensive photoelectric coupled model of tandem photovoltaic operating under current-mismatch conditions was developed. Origin of FF compensation effect under current mismatch conditions was identified. Imposing current limits on sub-cells with superior performance can effectively enhance overall TSC performance.
