Touch on metal differs by implementing a conductive overlay material, instead of a finger, suspended over the capacitive touch sensors to form the second plate of the capacitor being measured.
Touch Sensor Design Capacitive Touch sensor design relies on the sensor and the electrodes connected to it. The electrode's geometry, size, material, thickness, and layout affect touch sensor measurements.
Mutual capacitance touch sensors use a pair of electrodes for each sensor node and measure the capacitance between them. The sensor is formed where the electrodes are placed close together, usually with interleaved segments to optimize the length of the parallel conductors forming the base capacitance of the sensor node. Figure 2-1.
A capacitive touch through metal button design is almost the same as general capacitive touch. By utilizing touch through metal instead of traditional capacitive touch, the application can benefit from waterproof and dust proof features and can be widely used in kitchen applications and white goods. Capacitive sensing can be used for touch applications and capacitive touch can be used for capacitive sensing applications, but this is misleading to users since there are advantages and limitations between devices designed for the two separate applications. Some typical requirements are shown in Table 3-1.
Capacitive touch sensors fall into two general categories: the mutual-capacitance configuration and the self-capacitance configuration. The former, in which the sensing capacitor is composed of two terminals that function as emitting and receiving electrodes, is preferred for touch-sensitive displays.
